Chief Executive of the Professional Footballers Association joined in the debate on Mikel Arteta's England eligibility.

Gordon Taylor joined a growing list of high profile names to voice his opinion on the contentious issue and, like Steven Gerrard and Robert Earnshaw before him, he backed Fabio Capello to push ahead with offering Arteta an England cap.

Speaking to Alan Brazil on TalkSport, Taylor made reference to the England cricket team who romped to success in the 20/20 world cup with outstanding performances from Kevin Pietersen, Craig Kieswetter and Michael Lumb, all of whom are South African by birth.

He said: "It’s going to be a big issue.

"It’s happened in cricket and rugby and the paying public seem to have accepted it.

"If a player comes over and wants to be nationalised as a resident, and is offering to play for England, then that should be given serious consideration."

Earlier in the week an unlikely contributor to the argument was Welsh international Robert Earnshaw, he said the FA should take the pragmatic approach before Luis Aragones realises what he's missing.

He said: "If I was England manager I would have arteta in my squad before Spain come."

Arteta has refused to be drawn on the subject, saying he would concentrate on his football at Everton until he the FA give him something to think about.
