A source close to Everton starlet Jack Rodwell has revealed the 19-year-old faces up to month on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

The midfielder, who is rumoured to be a last minute target of Sir Alex Ferguson, picked up a knock in Sunday's 1-0 away defeat to Aston Villa.

Making his first Premier League start of the season at Villa Park, Rodwell was replaced in the 70th minute by fellow young-gun Seamus Coleman.

Rodwell's injury was at first thought to be minore but an insider said he faces up to a month of intensive physiotherapy.

Rodwell was at the heart of the Blues' 5-1 drubbing of Huddersfield in midweek, but he looks to have been thwarted at the peak of his form by the injury which could see him miss key games against Manchester United and Liverpool.

The 19-year-old has been the subject transfer deadline day speculation this weekend, with United reported to be offering Michael Carrick plus cash for Rodwell's signature.

While that deal now looks unlikely, David Moyes does have form for bringing in players on the last day of the transfer window, having sealed club record signing Marouane Fellaini in an 11th hour £15m scoop.
