Everton star: England call-up is not my problem

Mikel Arteta has refused to be drawn into the ethical argument surrounding his possible call up to the England squad.

Rumours of Fabio Capello having already spoken to Arteta were rubbished by the Spaniard who said his position had not changed since the last time he spoke publicly on the issue.

He said: "The situation is the same as it has always been.

"No-one has contacted me about it and I said really clearly last week my thoughts about it, and I'm going to repeat myself - if that opportunity comes I will consider it very seriously.

"But that's all I can say. I don't think it's me that has to make the decision.

"The FA have to think about the situation, they have to propose something, they have to talk to me, and then we can talk about it."

The debate over whether Arteta should be offered an England jersey has heated up in recent weeks with leading sports journalists in disagreement over whether Capello should take advantage of Arteta's situation.

But a poll ran by ClickLiverpool.com recently showed that 78 per cent of Evertonians would like to see the Everton vice captain representing England.

When asked if he would be contacting Capello to inform the Italian of his availability, Arteta said he like any other player, is in no position to be contacting the FA about whether he should picked.

He said: " "I don't think it's me who has to say anything because it's not my job, but if Capello and the FA say it's alright then I'll say what I think.

"At the moment there is nothing. If one day there is something I will be as clear as I am now."

Arteta will now want to be focussing on what is fast turning into a nightmare start to the season for Everton who have taken just one point from there first three Premier League games.
