Derry Mathews is confident he can earn himself a world title shot when he finally clashes with European champion Gavin Rees.
But first, ‘Dirty’ Derry must deal with the threat posed by fellow scouser Stephen Jennings.
The 27-year-old former WBU featherweight champion was due to face ‘The Rock’ until the Welshman was forced to pull out citing a hand injury.
Mathews will now go toe-to-toe with Jennings, who is unbeaten in his first 6 professional bouts, this Saturday (30 July) at the Greenbank Sports Centre.
“He’s a tough guy,” said Mathews.
“To be fair, he is a friend of mine, but its business at the end of the day.
“I’ve boxed him three times as an amateur, and beat him all three – so I know he is going to want revenge.
“He will see this as a big opportunity to go onto bigger and better things. If he beats me, he will get a shot at the European title.
“But I believe I have all the tools to beat him – I’m stronger, and more experienced.”
Mathews has fought eight times in the last 12 months, losing only once to Gary Buckland.
He avenged defeats to Scott Lawton and Choi Tsseveenpurev, while also capturing the IBO International and English lightweight titles.
“I’m at a good point in my career,” added Mathews.
“I’ve had a few bad defeats, and a few personal problems away from the ring.
“But I have come back the last 12 months bigger and stronger and I think I’ve proved the doubters wrong.”
“After I beat Gavin Rees, we will sit down and plan the future – maybe another big world title shot - but first I’ve got to deal with Stephen Jennings.”
