Liverpool lightweight Derry Mathews says he’s "gutted" his chance to punch his way back into the big time has been postponed.
Mathews, 27, was due to fight European lightweight champion Gavin Rees at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff later this month
But Rees damaged a tendon in his left hand while sparring and will see a hand specialist on Wednesday.
The fight's promoters said they hoped to arrange a new date in September or October.
“I’m gutted,” Mathews said.
“European titles are life changing opportunities, but I know I’m going to get the fight. I’ve spoken to (promoter) Eddie Hearn and he said the fight will happen in September.”
"I'm devastated," Rees's trainer Gary Lockett said.
"We've worked very very hard and he was improving in every aspect in his training.
"He spared Danny Butler last week and caught him on his head with his knuckle and he's done the tendons in his knuckle.
"He's had problems with his knuckles for a few years now but this time it cracked very and I think he hurt it more than ever and it's very stiff at the moment."
Mathews will now fight Stephen Jennings at the Greenbank Sports Centre in Sefton Park on July 30th.
And the former WBU Featherweight champion is certain his mind will be in the right place.
“I’m a true professional, every opponent is a risky opponent. Jennings will know if he beats me he’s got a shot at a European title.
“But I’ve got too much for him and I’ll be back to face Rees in the Autumn.”
The fight's promoters also confirmed fans who purchased tickets for the show will receive a full refund from their point of purchase.
