Boxing: Juergen Braehmer pulls out of title defence against Nathan Cleverly

WBO light-heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer has pulled out of Saturday night’s title defence against Nathan Cleverly.

The 32-year-old German is now in danger of being stripped of his title, as he also withdrew from a fight with Beibet Shumenov in January.

Braehmer is complaining about an eye injury he picked up ten days ago, and has not travelled to London.

Cleverly has reacted angrily, and accused Braehmer of “ducking the fight”.

“I’m absolutely devastated,” said the 24-year-old Welshman.

“This is the fight that I really wanted - I've been gunning for Juergen Braehmer for over a year now.

"It's very unprofessional that he hasn't turned up, he hasn't arrived. He's ducked out for the fight as far as I am concerned.

"He doesn't want to fight me, he's been ducking me and the proof is there now that he doesn't want the fight."

Cleverly has had little luck when it actually comes to getting in the ring with fighters he has been training for of late.

In his last fight he defeated Najib Mohammedi on points at the Echo Arena in December, having been originally penned to face Alejandro Lakatos.

A stand-in opponent is due to be announced later on this afternoon (Wed).
