Boxing: David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko bout "99% complete"

WBA champion David Haye and IBF/WBO titlist Wladimir Klitschko have confirmed the biggest bout in heavyweight boxing today.

The fight, which will happen in Germany this summer, was announced following the Ukrainian’s decision to pull out of his April 30 date with Dereck Chisora.

Klitschko claims he has still not yet recovered from the abdominal injury that saw him cancel their clash in December.

The widely propagated 2nd July date is the most likely option for the unification bout, although it could happen a week earlier on 25th June.

Bernd Boente, the Klitschko’s manager, said the deal was 99 percent complete, adding that Dortmund and Gelsenkirchen were being considered as potential venues.

Both football stadiums hold upwards of 60,000 spectators.

Haye’s manager, Adam Booth, says he was always confident the two parties could conclude a deal.

He said: "We have a deal - we're happy with it, they're happy with it.

"They didn't want to come to the UK for a couple of reasons, but David is happy to go anywhere to fight Vladimir.

“He doesn't care if it's in his back garden - David is raring to go.

"The most likely date is July 2 in Germany, but it may be a week earlier on June 25.

“We were always confident that this fight would happen."

Haye has stated his intention to retire before his 31st birthday in October, but still hopes to fight Wladimir’s older brother, Vitali, who meets Cuban Odlanier Solis on 19th March.

Beating the long-reigning Ukrainian brothers would see the Bermondsey man etch his name on the list of undisputed heavyweight champions.

He would be keeping distinguished company alongside the likes of Ali, Frasier and Foreman, as well as modern greats such as Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson.

But don’t expect Wladimir and Vitali to go quietly into the night.
