The FA Cup Final 2010 has a dual role as a "whistle blower" in the Liverpool city region.

Not only is Chris Foy used to blowing his whistle as a match official - he is also a police constable with a distinguished record of service in uniform with Merseyside Police.

PC Chris Foy, 47, is part of a specialist team dedicated to combating anti-social behaviour in the county.

But he is taking the weekend off from policing the streets of Liverpool to keep John Terry and Didier Drogba in check, as Chelsea take-on Portsmouth in the crunch match.

Ultra-fit Chris has refereed 35 high-profile Premier League and Championship matches this season and says police work and refereeing are "not so different".

Last week, the St Helens-born copper lent his support to Merseyside Police's Anti-Social Behaviour Pledge.

He said: "Whether it's a sporting event or just everyday life, people have the right to enjoy themselves and go about their business without the fear of abuse, threats or violence."

Chris, who is based at Belle Vale station in Liverpool added: "I find refereeing and police work compliment each other really well.

"Being in the police gives you man-management skills and talking about being a referee helps me break down barriers when I meet the public.

"Fortunately, Merseyside Police have been absolutely marvellous in enabling me to live a dream."

Chris is an ambassador for the FA's Respect programme - a campaign to combat unacceptable behaviour in the sport, on and off the pitch.

The campaign ranges through all levels of the game and in the Barclays Premier League, it appears to be having an beneficial impact, with less yellow cards being issued for dissent.

Added chris: “I think Respect is paying off. It’s paying off because we’re setting the lead in this country.

"We’ve made massive strides. It’s something that we’ve bought into at every level and the stats produced show that cautions for dissent across the board have fallen. That’s really great, it’s wonderful.

"I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved in this country. The image of the game is so important at the top level and it cascades its way down to junior football because they’re seeing that it’s working.”

Chris will take centre stage when the big match kicks off at Wembley on Saturday at 3pm.
