Voters appear to have lost interest in the political turmoil of a hung parliament, with more drawn to developments in Coronation Street than Westminster, according to Monday's TV viewing figures.

BBC1's prime-time election special polled just 12.5% of Monday night's television audience, a total of 2.987 million viewers, while the ITV1 flagship soap scooped a staggering audience of over 9 million, 40.7% of the public.

Likewise, twice as many people tuned in to watch the latest installment of Eastenders, than the BBC's 6pm news bulletin, signalling huge public disinterest in political point-scoring.

The figures reflect growing public frustration as cloak-and-dagger discussions between the three political parties moved into a fifth day without a resolution.
