Angela Eagle held her Labour seat in Wallasey, winning a total of 21,578 votes compared to Conservative Leah Fraser, who netted 13,071.

With a 63.4 percent turn out (up on the 57 percent in 2005) voters in Wallasey took to the polls to cast their support for Labour's candidate. At the last election Angela had been re-elected with a majority of 9,109.

Counting at Wallasey Town Hall did not start until 2.55am due to an unprecedented number of postal votes, 8845, which required verification.

Speaking after the result was announced at 4.40am, beaming Angela Eagle said: "I am extremely pleased, given the results around the country."

Asked whether she would be happy "getting into bed" with the Liberal Democrats should a hung parliament occur, Angela alluded to the fact she was wearing both a red and yellow rosette.

But Angela would not be moved to comment on whether she would back Gordon Brown to continue as Leader of the Labour party.
