Did 'The Pill' kill Liverpool region bank worker Jenna Morris?

A bank worker who took The Pill for ten years was killed by a blood clot thought to have been caused by the contraceptive drug.

Pretty Jenna Morris, died after a deep vein thrombosis developed in her legs and spread to her lungs.

Before she collapsed Jenna complained of shooting pains in her legs and within hours her mother Christine found her daughter’s body at her home in Merseyside.

A post mortem revealed she died of a blood clot, possibly caused by the contraceptive pills which Jenna had been taking since she was a teenager.

Her devastated family today paid tribute to their "beautiful pink princess" as they warned others of the peril of taking The Pill long-term.

Just weeks before the tragedy she had been signed-off work with ill health by her doctor who diagnosed kidney stones and prescribed a course of antibiotics.

Jenna's sister Suzanne said: "I'm still in shock. I still cannot believe what happened. I keep thinking it is a terrible dream.

"Jenna was originally told she had kidney stones. She was due to go for a scan but it would not have detected the blood clot, which we were told was possibly caused by the contraceptive pill.

"People should be aware because it could happen to anyone. Jenna was our beautiful pink princess and a fantastic sister. I miss her so much."

At the time of her death Jenna was planning a wedding to her fiance, Luke Hawson. who proposed to her on her 28th birthday in November last year.

Jenna, who lived at Poulton, Wirral, was training to become a mortgage advisor at the HSBC bank and parents Bill and Chris said she "always made them proud".

At her funeral, hundreds dressed in pink as they crammed into the chapel at Landican Cemetery, Birkenhead, to say goodbye to a "happy, smiley, girly girl".

A letter from Luke read out by the vicar said: "Sorry I could not give you the big day you always dreamed of, Princess."

An inquest into Jenna’s death has been opened and adjourned.

In tribute to Jenna both Suzanne and Luke will take part in the Wirral Coastal Walk on May 23 to raise funds for the thrombosis charity Lifeblood.

Jenna's sister-in-law, Judith Spivey, told of her concern that contraceptive pills could be linked to the thrombosis that killed Jenna Morris.

Jenna was engaged to marry Judith's brother Luke Hawson, who was himself too upset to talk about the tragedy.

Judith, who has one child, said a port-mortem report on bank worker Jenna had identified The Pill as a potentially significant factor in her death.

However she said Luke remains unconvinced that contraceptives played a significant role in her death and hoping that more detail will emerge at a full inquest.

Speaking at her terraced home in Poulton, Wirral, Judith, 30, said: "The whole family is devastated. No-one can believe this could have happened to Jenna.

"She was so young, beautiful and full of life. Luke is just lost without her.

"He is very upset that perhaps her death could have been avoided, but we cannot be completely sure and obviously contraception is still incredibly important."

Jenna died suddenly of a pulmonary thrombosis following an aneurism in her thigh at the aged of 28.

Judith added: "Luke was told by the coroner that the contraception could have been a factor in causing the blood clot in her leg, but it seems we can never be completely sure about that.

"There could be a lot of other factors, but obviously there needs to be some very serious research into the effects of these drugs to allay concerns of women who are taking them."

Judith is taking part in a sponsored walk, along with Jenna's sister Suzanne and other family and friends, to raise funds for the thrombosis awareness charity Lifeblood.

Added Judith: "The money raised will help this charity and go some way towards preventing future tragedies."

Very sad to die at such a young age. The inquest needs to be thorough and its results well publicised. Thanks for carrying this story.
