John Prescott's son shunned by Labour party

John Prescott's son has been shunned by Labour in his bid to become MP for Weaver Vale, Runcorn.

Labour Party members instead backed local Councillor John Stockton, who has represented the Halton Brook ward of Runcorn for the past eight years.

David Prescott, a former BBC journalist who was shortlisted for the seat earlier this month, came second in the vote, losing out by a margin of 31 votes.

It is the second time Prescott junior has been left out in the cold in a bid to become a Labour party candidate.

In 2008, David suffered an embarrassing defeat when Karl Turner, a local barrister, took Hull East seat his father had held for 38 years.

Prescott junior later took to his Twitter page, blaming his defeat on spending just 15 days campaigning.

He wrote: "Not bad from standing start of 15 days campaigning.

"It was all a bit of a whirlwind.

"I wish Weaver Vale and its new candidate John Stockton all the very best in the fight to keep the seat."

The Weaver Vale seat fell vacant after Mike Hall, the constituency's MP since 1997, decided to step down at the next election.

With the general election looming, David Prescott insists this latest set-back
will not put him off politics, ready to climb back on the Prescott Express, the bus the party are using to get their message out across the country.

He said: "I promised at the beginning of my Weaver Vale campaign, win or lose, I’ll be back in the next few weeks with the battle bus to help them keep it Labour."

Weaver Vale Constituency Labour Party chair John Beech welcomed Councillor Stockton's nomination.

He said: "Mike Hall has served Weaver Vale with great pride and distinction since 1997 and will be a hard act to follow but we know that in John we now have the best possible candidate.

"With the General Election approaching I know that Labour now has the best candidate to represent Weaver Vale in Westminster fighting for a future fair for all."

Councillor Stockton, who works at a local secondary school, said: "It’s a great privilege to have been selected by the members of Weaver Vale.

"I'm determined to fight for a future fair for all in Weaver Vale.

"At the General Election people have a choice: I will stand up and fight for a future fair for all in Weaver Vale."
