Health experts slam 'World's Strongest Beer'

A Scottish brewery has angered health experts and alcohol awareness groups, by creating the "World's Strongest Beer".

The super-strength brew named 'Sink the Bismarck!' weighs in at a staggering 41% alcohol, narrowly outdoing the previous title holder, German beer 'Schorschbock', at 40%.

The BrewDog Brewery, based in Aberdeenshire, has a history of making ultra-strong beer and lager. In 2009 they made headlines with their previous creation, 'Tactical Nuclear Penguin', which was 32% alcohol.

But despite criticism, BrewDog insist they encourage "responsible" drinking. James Watt, Managing Director of the drink maker said: "We are doing all we can to promote a new and responsible approach to beer drinking.

"Beer has a terrible reputation in Britain, it's ignorant to assume that a beer can't be enjoyed responsibly like a nice dram or a glass of fine wine. A beer like Sink the Bismarck should be enjoyed in spirit sized measures.

"It is important that you be careful with this beer and show it the same amount of sceptical, tentative respect you would show an international chess superstar, clown or gypsy."

But despite these claims, alcohol awareness groups remain sceptical.

Jack Law, chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland, said: "Over the past few months BrewDog have continued to produce stronger and stronger beers.

"By commenting on this irresponsible brewing practice we only serve to add to their marketing and therefore we have no further comment to make."

Sink The Bismarck will only be available via the company's website, and costs a weighty £40 pounds for a 330ml bottle.
