A unique Facebook experiment could help cure the common cold, after a healthcare company launched the UK's first social networking drug trial.
After the worst winter weather in over 40 years, Welsh drug manufacturer BBI Healthcare have taken to Twitter and Facebook inviting users to join a bold new public trial.
The company are searching for a mix of at least 20 online networkers who regularly suffer from colds, to trial their new winter health elixir, 'Bio-Strath'.
The volunteers will be asked to keep a daily record of their winter battle with the sniffles on their online blog.
The study is the first of its kind and could revolutionise the way drugs are tried and tested in the future, allowing manufacturers to research new treatments in record time.
BBI spokesperson Mellanie Tymm, said: "We’re looking for a group of ordinary people to take part in the trial. All feedback will be completely uncensored and open to the public for all to see.
"We know from years of testing that it can months to get any kind of response, but we hope using online social networks will make results much quicker.
"Each participant will take Bio-Strath for 60 days and input into our blog to let everyone know how they’re feeling over time and what benefits they notice.
"We’re also looking forward to hearing what wonderful remedies people swear by."
Based in Pencoed, Glamorgan, the company has acted after studies revealed that employee absences more than doubled across the UK this winter as bitter winds brought the heaviest snowfall since 1963.
Would-be volunteers can find out more information and sign up for the trial at www.60healthydays.co.uk.
