The mother of murdered toddler James Bulger is demanding a meeting with producers of the Liverpool-based Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks over a shock storyline.
The teenage drama is to feature scenes in which two characters confess that they are living under false names after being convicted of a child-on-child murder.
In chilling echoes of the murder of James Bulger the soap's characters "Loretta" and "Chrissy" confess that were given new identities after killing a toddler when they were aged 12.
The script is a thinly-veiled reference to the aftermath of the 1993 abduction and murder of James Bulger, in Liverpool, by Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, then aged 10.
Played-out by actresses Melissa Walton and Amber Hodgkiss, the scenes will feature in Christmas episodes and are calculated to draw a big audience.
The show is filmed in Liverpool and Chester by Lime Productions and James' mother Denise Fergus revealed that she is a regular viewer.
But Denise said she is appalled that a locally-based TV company would use such a clear reference her son's murder without consulting her.
The mass-market TV broadcast follows a two plays which have featured references to James' murder when they were staged earlier this year at small theatre venues.
Denis, 42, said: "I'm shocked and disgusted at what Hollyoaks are doing.
"They have clearly based this story on what happened to James and it's outrageous that they should do this without consulting with me in any way.
"This is third time this year that someone has written a so-called drama that treats my son's murderers as some kind of victims and celebrities.
"It's wrong and I find it very hurtful to that a TV company is making a horrific murder that happened only sixteen years ago into the subject for a soap opera.
"How dare they treat James as though he is public property?
"It is an insult to his memory and I am particularly shocked that a programme, based in Liverpool, has gone ahead and done this knowing that it would be so controversial.
"Turning James' death into a topic for entertainment is just wrong.
"I'm demanding an urgent meeting with the producers of Hollyoaks over this.
"It seems they have already recorded these episodes so they think they have got away with it. But I want to look them in the eye and hear them explain how they can justify it.
"I want to know how they could stoop so low as to broadcast such a horrible insult to the memory of my beautiful son."
Two-year-old James was murdered on a railway line in Liverpool after being abducted from a shopping centre in Bootle by Thompson and Venables on 12th February 1993.
The pair, now aged 27, were paroled in 2001 after being detained for eight years in children's detention centres.
They live in the UK under false names with the protection of court orders that ban the media from reporting anything that would reveal their new identities.
Added Denise: "This Hollyoaks script is another case of glorifying this those two.
"They have still got lives. James hasn't. They took that away from him and there is no reason on earth why they deserve a shred of sympathy.
"I have always said that it is wrong for them to be encouraged to live a lie, but that is not a reason to stage a TV soap about it.
"Earlier this year Jack Straw has come out and said that he is going to set up a Victims of Crime service.
"I hope he is going to take into account that victim's families need long term support especially in cases like ours where salt is rubbed in the wound over and over again.
"The only reason Hollyoaks are doing this is their own self-interest - to get viewers.
"I watch Hollyoaks, but if they go ahead and broadcast this it will be the last time I will watch it and I will ask other people to support me and boycott the show too."
