Liverpool council leader Warren Bradley has condemned the Labour Government's "lack of control on the levers of power".
Bradley spoke out on Friday, after he received an email from the Labour Government’s Identity and Passport Office, asking for a meeting to discuss the North West "launch plans" for the expensive and unnecessary Identity Card Scheme.
The email stated; "The North West Region is going to be a key area for us in the roll out of the National Identity Service, with Identity Cards for British Citizens being available in Liverpool early in the new year."
Confusingly, the email arrived just forty-eight hours after Gordon Brown publicly quashed the scheme at the Labour Party Conference, telling his audience; "I can say to you today, in the next Parliament there will be NO compulsory ID cards for British citizens."
Liberal Democrat council leader Bradley was astonished by the lack of cohesion within the government, branding it a "joke".
He said; "It resembles a sketch from 'Yes Minister', this clearly indicates the Labour Government no longer have control of the levers of power in this country, its no wonder the UK is out of control."
"I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this email, after hearing Gordon Brown’s comments on the scheme just hours earlier.
"The most outrageous thing of all is that the Labour Party is trying to trick people in our country into thinking that they are not implementing the illiberal ID cards, the Labour party are pretending they are not compulsory.
"What Gordon Brown failed to mention in his speech is that when you renew or apply for a passport or driving license, your details will be entered onto the Government’s national database regardless of his hollow promises saying the scheme is being binned!
"We all know how good the Government is at looking after databases!
"It is misleading; it is pretend U-turns like this, that are disillusioning Labour voters in Liverpool and across the UK.
"I, along with the Liberal Democrat team in Liverpool, will continue to fight to retain our civil liberties against these pointless and expensive ID Cards."
