Friends, family, and colleagues have packed Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral to pay tribute to a "lion" of a soldier, who died while serving in Afghanistan.

Hundreds of mourners lined the steps up to the Cathedral as his coffin was carried into the Cathedral by colleagues, draped in the Union flag and under a mounted Merseyside Police escort.

Twenty-year-old Kingsman Jason Dunn-Bridgeman, of 2nd Battallion, the Duke of Lancaster's regiment, was on foot patrol in Southern Afghanistan when he was shot dead earlier this month.

His regiment's commanding officer, Brigadier Michael Griffiths, accompanied Kingsman Dunn-Bridgeman's mother Tracey and sister Chelsea into the service.

Prayers were led by pupils from Christ the King school in Huyton, Liverpool, where the fallen soldier was a former pupil.

Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Boyd, who was Dunn-Bridgeman's commanding officer in Afghanistan paid tribute to "Dunny".

He said; "It is a difficult day today, he was the first soldier that the regiment has lost in battle in Afghanistan.

"I have lost a regimental son and the soldiers in the battalion have lost a regimental brother. Dunny was a real character. He was intelligent, spirited and he loved adventure training."

Colleagues described the Kingsman as a popular, witty memer of his regiment, and a selfless friend.

At a ceremony on Monday, members of his family were presented with a memorial scroll and the Elizabeth Cross by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool.

RIP. Made me sad to hear his story on Radio City News this morning. Just shows you the sacrifices these lads make.
