An essay written by a 10-year-old Paul McCartney that pays tribute to our 'lovely young queen' has been discovered after being hidden for 50 years in a library record office.

The handwritten piece about the Queen Elizabeth's Coronation was found by author Kevin Roach at the Central Library in Liverpool.

In neat handwriting, the schoolboy submitted a 300-word paper to celebrate the Queen for a city council essay competition, in 1953, while he was a pupil at Joseph Williams junior school in Belle Vale, Liverpool.

The former Beatle won the under-11s age group category, despite his work having been marked down for grammatical errors.

He was presented with a prize at the Central Library by the Liverpool's Lord Mayor on 27 May of that year.

Hidden away for 56 years, the essay is thought to be Sir Paul's earliest known creative work.

In the article, McCartney declares Britain's "present day royalty rules with affection rather than force" and goes on to compare the jubilant scenes expected outside Buckingham Palace to the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066.

The essay concludes: "After all this bother, many people will agree with me that it was well worth it."

Mr Roach, who unearthed the essay after researching the McCartney family, described the find as 'unique'.

He added: 'I did know from reading the council minutes that this competition took place, and it was then a case of looking for the actual winning entries,' he said.

He said he wasn't concerned about its value, but likened the essay to John Lennon's christening bracelet, which was the last piece of Beatles memorabilia to be sold in a private auction, which fetched £27,000.

In 1997, Paul McCartney was knighted by the same queen he wrote about in 1953.
