Thousands of Liverpool region schoolchildren have become world record holders after they created the largest human Olympic Rings display.

Pupils on Merseyside descended on Crosby beach dressed in red, yellow, green, black and blue shirts and trousers.

A total of 5,693 youngsters, organised by Sefton Council, formed the Olympic Rings logo to make a new world record watched by thousands of spectators.

The rings were formed as the Olympic torch passed through the coastal town 10 miles from the seaside resort Southport.

The bid was registered with the who confirmed that the schools from the Sefton borough held new holders after it was confirmed they beat the previous record.

The success of 2,234 participants who formed the five rings in Bath in May proved to be short lived as the Guinness Book of Records have confirmed a new record holder.

The leading authority on human achievements told the thrilled record-breakers: "Congratulations! Your record has been approved.

"The largest human Olympic Rings consists of 5,963 participants and was achieved by Sefton schools in Crosby, Merseyside, on 1st June."

Copies of the official Guinness certificate are now being sent to all the schools involved.

There were 51 schools involved in the event including Christchurch, Trinity St Peter's and Crosby High, a specialist college for 11 - 16 year-olds with learning difficulties.

Headteacher Toni Oxton-Grant said: "I took the whole school on four coaches because the kids would probably never experience anything like this again.

"It was an amazing day, we formed the green ring and I'm very proud of all my pupils who were complemented on their good behaviour.

"At the end of year assembly they will all be getting their official Guinness record holder certificates, I'm very proud of them.

"On the day the sun was shining, there was a clown, some stilt-walkers dressed as the Beatles and Para-Olympians running along the beach.

"It was very memorable and we all were at a great vantage point to see the torch come through Crosby."

Cllr Peter Dowd, the leader of Sefton Council, said: "That day was a remarkable occasion in Sefton for all the right reasons.

"The world record attempt capped off an unbelievable day and it is so pleasing to hear that the world record attempt has now been officially confirmed by Guinness.

"Having nearly 6,000 people on Crosby beach forming the Olympic Rings is a sight I, and many others, will never forget."
