A brief guide to adding value to your home

Before we can start to think about searching for our dream home, we have to think about putting our own home on the market. Receiving the best deal for our home as quickly as possible is essential to making a move.

This requires a great deal of research and work. Once our own home is in a good state to be sold for a fair price, we can start to think about picking up some removal boxes and searching for a new place.

As well as making our home attractive to prospective buyers, we will want to do all we can to boost its value.

Buying a home is a large investment and the amount we receive for our existing property is likely to have a considerable bearing on the sorts of homes we look for and the areas in which we search. Here, we look at a number of ways in which you can positively affect both the value and saleability of your home.

Renovation

Renovating major rooms like kitchens and bathrooms is a great way to add value to your home. Changes like these can be costly but are always a wise investment. Updating even just one room in the home can go a long way to creating a modern feel throughout the entire property.

Bear in mind when renovating rooms in your home that your tastes might not match those of the potential buyers who will be viewing your home in the coming months. Do your best to keep designs fairly neutral and middle of the road. Personal touches can then be made by those who end up buying your home.

Removing clutter

If we’re honest, most of us have a great deal of clutter lying around our home. While it tends to go unnoticed in our own living space, potential buyers will see this as an obstacle to viewing the home as an empty shell. Getting one step ahead of the game and looking for some cheap removal boxes in which to store all this clutter until the big move can do a lot to make your home a more attractive option to those viewing it.

If you want to conceal items that you use day-to-day, big cardboard boxes probably aren’t the most pleasing solution to the eye. Consider a well-placed screen or invest in linen boxes and wicker hampers, which whist adding a rustic feel, are great for storing anything from DVDs and games to bathroom essentials and accessories.

A top tip when storing any electrical or leather items in a box is to pop a Silica Gel sachet in too. This will work to eliminate the moisture in your box, preventing condensation, corrosion and fungal growth, meaning that whenever it comes to unpacking, your items will be in the same mint condition as when you packed them.

Garden landscaping

Just as renovating the kitchen or bathroom can add value to your home, updating the garden can do the same. A nice outside space is on the checklist for most people looking for a new home. Ticking this box may well be the easiest and most effective thing you do when selling your home.

Consider breaking your garden up to cater for all needs. If you can, try to keep open spaces free to create a place for kids to play. You might also like to include secluded areas in which to relax, as well as a decking area to suit those long summer evenings spent around the barbecue with family and friends.

When you’re finished making your home an appealing space, you’re ready to start selling!
