Beatles fans held a 70th Birthday Party for Sir Paul McCartney at a statue in Liverpool that was the world's first major monument to honour the Fab Four.

Followers of the Liverpool Beatles Appreciation Society (LBAS) came armed with flowers and cards and draped garlands on the statue in the Cavern Walks shopping centre to toast Sir Paul’s milestone today (18th June 2012).

LBAS Chairman Mr John James-Chambers said: "We invited Beatles fans and members of the general public to join in this joyful event and we were pleased with the response.

"We went with the theme 'All You Need is Love' and this was our way of showing the devotion of fans in Liverpool where the story of Beatles' first began."

John is one of the founders of LBAS which successfully campaigned to have the statue erected in 1984 and is acknowledged as one of the grass-roots pioneers of Beatles tourism in Liverpool.

He added: "This is a big year for The Beatles and their fans. Its the 50th anniversary of the group's formation and we could not let Paul's birthday go unmarked in the city.

"He is an inspiration not only to his fans but to generations of musicians who have followed in his footsteps."

The Society, which was established in 1977, is asking Liverpool City Council to posthumously bestow the Freedom of the City on Beatles' Manager Brian Epstein and to name a road after him in the year that marks the 45th anniversary of his death.
