Police have launched a double murder investigation after the bodies of two elderly women were found in the Liverpool region.

Detectives investigating the murder of Margaret Biddolph at her home in Southport, are linking the grim find with the discovery of the corpse of another old woman at a nearby house.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested and is being quizzed by police who had been working on the theory that Mrs Biddolph died during a burglary at her property in Lonsdale Road where she had lived for 36 years.

The second body, also of a woman in her 80s, was discovered at an address in Birch Street, less than half a mile away.

Merseyside Police said: "As a result of further enquiries a second body has been recovered at an address in Birch Street, Southport in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday, 22 February).

"At this time the cause of death has yet to be established and Home Office post mortems will be carried out later today.

"Both of the victims are believed to be women in their 80s, although formal identification is yet to take place.

"A 43-year-man from Southport has been arrested on suspicion of murder, and will be further interviewed in connection with the enquiry."
