A man suspected of making racist taunts towards Patrick Evra at Liverpool's Anfield stadium have arrested a 59-year-old man.

Police earlier released a still of a man who appeared to be making ‘monkey’ gestures towards the Man Utd player from his seat in the stand.

An image circulated on social networking websites during Saturday’s game, the first between United and Liverpool since an FA inquiry found Luis Suárez guilty of racially abusing Evra.

The United left-back, who was at fault for Liverpool's winner, was booed throughout the game by the Anfield crowd.

A Liverpool statement read: "Following today’s game we were made aware of an image being circulated on social media relating to an incident at this afternoon’s FA Cup tie.

"We are now working closely with Merseyside Police to establish the facts of what occurred and identify the individual involved.

"We would urge any of our supporters with any information to contact either the club or the police."

Merseyside Police said they had put specialist detectives onto the case.

Chief Supt Jon Ward said: "We can confirm that specialist officers are reviewing match footage, as a result of a picture posted on Twitter.

"This matter is now under investigation by specialist hate crime detectives and we are working with Liverpool Football Club to identify the man in question.

"We take all forms of offensive behaviour seriously, and we will always thoroughly investigate such claims."

The suspect was arrested in North Wales, in a joing operation by Merseyside Police and North Wales Police.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "A 59-year-old man from he Noth Wales area has been arresed and taken to police sation on Merseyside for questioning
