A suspected road rage killing may have been filmed on mobile phones as children made their way home from school.
Witnesses suggested a man was attacked by a driver who jumped out of car after two vehicles were involved in minor crash in a suburban road Wirral.
Detectives confirmed that one 42-year-old man had died as a result of a stab wound to the chest following the incident in Bebington.
Police confirmed that they were called to busy Teehey Lane at around 3.10pm after reports of an "altercation and a stabbing".
The victim - thought to be a local man - was treated by paramedics but was found to be dead when he arrived at Arrowe Park Hospital.
Another 42-year-old man, from the Birkenhead area, was arrested nearby a short time later on suspicion of murder and was being quizzed by detectives.
Road in the area were cordoned-off as forensic experts examined the area area for clues to how the killing happened.
The area is not covered by CCTV but detectives that a number of people - probaly including pupils on their way home from school - took photos and videos of the incident on mobile phones.
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "The investigation is at a very early stage. It is not known whether the two men knew each other or were strangers.
"Officers are aware that there were a large number of people in the area at the time, some of whom will have witnessed this incident and even taken photographs or footage on their mobile phone.
"We would appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to contact us."
