Kate Middleton is continuing to walk in the footsteps of her husband's mother, Diana Princess of Wales.

The Duchess of Cambridge has become a patron of Action on Addiction, a UK-based charity which works across different fields of drug treatment and prevention.

Her Royal Highness recently paid a private visit to one of the treatment centres and spoke at length to a number of clients about their addiction and personal journeys to recovery.

The late Princess Di became a global phenomenon with her campaigns for charities, including bringing aid to victims of landmine explosions.

The Duchess’s new roles reflect the Queen's wish to support the Royal Family’s work in highlighting important causes in the charitable and voluntary sector and the arts.

Kate has chosen to support organisations that complement the charitable work already undertaken by her husband.

Nick Barton, Chief Executive of Action on Addiction said:"It is a great honour for the Charity that Her Royal Highness has chosen to become our patron.

"We are very grateful to the Duchess whose support will enable us to keep the issue of addiction in the spotlight.

"Addiction is a consuming condition that results in a great deal of harm to individuals, families, communities and society as a whole.

"Yet, is not always well understood or responded to effectively. We are thrilled that the Duchess will be supporting us in our mission to free people from addiction and its effects."

The news has been welcomed by all the charities selected by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge, including Liverpool’s very own dry bar, The Brink.

The Brink is a social enterprise based in Parr Street, set up to help and cater for the growing recovery community in the City and those who live and work within the local area.

It has quickly become one of Liverpool’s hottest music venues, giving a platform for new artists and legends alike

Jacquie Johnson-Lynch, Head of Services for SHARP Liverpool, a Liverpool based recovery charity supported by Action on Addiction said: "It means such a lot to us as addiction and alcoholism is often left at the bottom of the pile in terms of charitable support.

"She really has put such a devastating condition back on the agenda.

"We look forward to hearing more about the her private and public visits."
