Rescue teams were battling high winds to search rocky ledges on Lanzarote after a British holidaymaker vanished during a hiking expedition.

Frantic relatives of Margaret Holt, 65, were clinging to the hope that she may have been blown-off a cliff path and been left maroooned or trapped.

Pensioner Margaret was last seen walking in Orzola, a remote small town on the northern tip of the island and heading for the Famara Cliff Path.

Her concerned family from Wirral, Merseyside, contacted the Spanish Civil Guard when the pensioner failed to make contact with them over Christmas.

Today (THURS) - six days after she was last seen - relatives had joined rescue teams in a third day of searches.

One relative, Ben Riley spoke from the search area and said: "We are battling through high winds in the hope of finding her."

The missing woman's daughter-in-law Wendy Banks appealed for information about the whereabouts of Mrs Holt through Facebook.

She said: "Margaret is a very fit woman who thinks nothing of walking 20 miles per day. She loves coastal paths.

"We have her passport, cards and personal items from her room so we know she only intended to go for a walk.

"Her mobile phone is with her but not working. We really believe she had a fall walking."

Officials on the Spanish Island have been tracing Mrs Holt's movements from the last sighting of her in the remote northern village of Orzola on Friday 23rd December.

The keen hiker, from Prenton, Merseyside, was wearing a pink T-shirt, Bermuda-style light brown shorts, white sandals and carrying a black bag.

A Spanish Civil Guard spokesperson said: "We know that Margaret was seen at 16:50 in the area of the Jameos del Agua & Cueva de los Verdes where she is believed to have walked from the direction of Yé / Máguez.

"She was then later spotted just outside Órzola between 6-7pm and we know that she didn’t get on the last bus from Órzola at 18:10.

"It is highly likely that Margaret would have thumbed for a lift, which is commonplace on the island, most locals will stop to give others a ride especially between these more remote villages."

The Foreign Office have confirmed they have been informed about the disappearence.

A spokesperson said: "The Spanish authorities are carrying out a search coordinated by the Civil Guard and local emergency services.

"Staff from the British Consulate are in contact with the authorities and the family."
