'No new identity for Venables' says Denise Fergus

The mother of murdered toddler James Bulger has backed the decision to deny her child's killer, Jon Venables, another new identity if he is paroled.

Venables, who murdered two-year-old James 18 years ago in a crime that horrified the nation, was jailed last year after being caught with a cache of sick child pornography.

Denise Fergus had feared officials would grant the twisted murdered a second new identity after he revealed his true name to friends - a deed that ultimately led to his arrest and convition.

It is estimated that the cost of giving prisoners like Venables a new identity under a court anonymity ruling is as much as #1m because of all the time and effort that goes into it.

But the possibility of Venables being handed a second false name has now been rejected on the grounds that he cannot be trusted to keep his true identity a secret.

The revelation means that the depraved killer who released on a life-licence in 2001, will now remain in prison for the foreseeable future for fear he could be the target of a revenge attack if released.

Denise Fegus backed the decision, insisting not another penny of tax-payers money should be spent on masking Jon Venables' identity and crimes.

Denise Fergus said: "No more money should be wasted on creating new identities for him because he would not be able to keep it secret.

"In his twisted mind he believes the name Jon Venables makes him a celebrity.

"He cannot resist telling people who he really is and seems to get some kind of perverse thrill from it.

"It shows that he cannot be trusted outside prison and he should not be paroled in that condition.

"If he has even done that in prison then it's clear that he has absolutely no remorse for murdering my son."

Mrs Fergus, who has set up a children's charity in memory of her tragic son, the James Bulger Memorial Trust, said she feels Venables has squandered the chances handed to him by parole officer.

She said it is now high time that Venables is treated for the untrustworthy and egotistical criminal that, she believes, he is.

Mrs Fergus said: "I think he has already blown his chances of parole next year because if he can't be trusted to keep his identity a secret then he cannot be safe to be paroled.

"What I am concerned about is if Venables discloses his identity to someone who then attacks him - whose fault is that going to be?

"I believe that if he is let out he will re-offend because prison is the only place that he actually feels safe.

"I think he is going to need a lot of treatment before they even think about letting him go, or he is just going to go back to being a dangerous paedophile.

"So, not only is he a risk to the public because he will re-offend, but if he is boasting about who he really is perhaps he could be attacked.

"But if that happens it will really it will be him that is as much to blame.

"The parole board and probation officers should not take any more chances with him - I do not want his blood on someones hands.

"He has been given enough chances already, and he has blown them all.

"The real problem is that he never done enough time for the crime.

"He would have been shown to have done his time if he had served the fifteen years minimum that the Home Secretary imposed on him in 1994.

"He would have paid his debt to society and he would not be at any more risk
than hundreds of other murderers who are let out on parole.

"It's time for a complete re-think of the way they handle this case because it is clear that he cannot live a lie.

"Venables is not on a witness protection programme - he is a criminal and perhaps they have now realised that is is time to treat him as a criminal.

"If you ask me he is not right in the head.

"I think he would be better-off in a mental hospital like Broadmoor where he could get proper treatment and where he would not be a risk to the public and they would not be as risk to him."
