Unseen Beatles photos on display in Liverpool

Unseen snaps of Beatles in their original line-up will go on show in Liverpool today.

The exhibition, at the University of Liverpool's Victoria Gallery and Museum, features images captured by photographer Astrid Kirchherr.

The German was the first snapper to take studio pictures of the Beatles in their formative years.

She is known for her engagement to original Beatles bassist Stuart Sutcliffe who tragically died of a brain haemorrhage in 1962.

The pictures show a distinctly less clean cut fab-five, as they were before losing a member and hiring Ringo Starr in place of original drummer Pete Best.

`Astrid Kirchherr: A Retrospective’, charts her photographic career from 1960 when she first met the Beatles in Hamburg until 1967 when she ultimately abandoned photography.

Kirchherr said: “I am delighted to come back to Liverpool to show my photographs at the Victoria Gallery & Museum, having enjoyed seeing Stuart’s work in the same venue in 2009.

The exhibition opens to the public on 25 August and runs until 30 January 2011.

Admission to all galleries and exhibitions at the Victoria Gallery & Museum is free and the building is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm.
