
Liverpool Hope University will honour Mahatma Gandhi's grandson at its graduation opening ceremony.
The distinguished academic, journalist and politician Professor Rajmohan Gandhi with be presented with a Doctorate of Letters tomorrow (Tuesday) at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.
Among the other "exceptional" individuals being recognised are Liverpool-born renowned philosopher and writer, Sir Anthony Kenny, who will be honoured with a Doctorate of Divinity alongside Cherie Booth QC, wife of former prime minister Tony Blair, who will receive her Doctorate of Laws.
And completing the honour list is Fr Michael Lapsley, a South African Anglican priest and social activist who was born in New Zealand.
Fr Lapsley lost both hands and an eye when, as an exiled chaplain to the African National Congress (ANC), he was victim of a letter bomb in 1990.
He will receive a Doctorate of Humane Letters.
Vice-Chancellor and Rector, Professor Gerald Pillay said: “They are all exceptional individuals for different reasons.
"They are people who are an inspiration to us all, whether it be in the field of education and research, engagement with public life or simply through living courageously in sometimes dangerous circumstances.
"In honouring them we bring honour to the University.”
