Labour’s Stephen Twigg won the Liverpool West Derby seat with a solid 52% majority after replacing veteran MP Bob Wareing.

Twigg, 43, received 22,953 votes, an enormous 18,467 more ballots than Liberal Democrat runner-up Paul Twigger.

A delighted Mr Twigg took to the stage to pay tribute to his predecessor Mr Wareing, who stepped down after 27 years in Parliament.

Thanking his supporters, he said: “"I’m not going to take that support for granted. I promised when I was selected I would be an active MP.

"This has been a constructive and amicable election campaign and I now look forward to the very challenging job I have in front of me working with the other four MPs and councillors to stand up for Liverpool in what will be difficult, challenging times ahead."
