Former Lord Mayor of Liverpool Steve Rotheram ensured Labour retained every seat in the city as he stormed to victory in Walton constituency.

Rotheram, 48, received 24,709 votes, giving him a winning majority of 57%, the same majority won by retiring Liverpool Walton MP Peter Kilfoyle in the 2005 General Election.

As the last count of the night was returned, father-of-three Rotheram joked: “It’s a shame there’s so few people left because you should have heard the speech I had prepared!”

Thanking his family, campaign team and fellow candidates, the former Fazakerley ward councillor said he was thrilled to become "the only bricklayer in the House of Commons".

Rotheram received 19,818 more votes than his nearest rival, Liberal Democrat candidate Patrick Moloney.
