Merseyside suffered unending downpours as more than three inches of rain fell across the region - greater than the level recorded through the whole of September in dry years.

As our picture shows some people were caught-out by the downpours which caused localised flooding on roads in the Liverpool.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said they were dealing with numerous calls for help from housholders and businesses who were affected by localised flooding, especially from older properties with cellars.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said some roads were made treacherous because of standing surface water and urged drivers to take care.

But the region escaped the worst of the weather with winds of up to 60mph lashing parts of Wales and the West of England.

The Met Office issued a severe weather warning, while the Environment Agency set up 15 flood warnings and alerts.

The miserable weather came after an August which saw the fewest hours of sunshine on record for the month. It was also among the wettest since records began.

Michael Dukes, a forecaster at MeteoGroup, said: "After a soggy August the ground is already saturated and, with such large amounts of rain likely to fall in under 24 hours, there is a high risk of localised flooding."

The outlook over the weekend is bleak, with more heavy showers predicted for much of England, Wales and southern Scotland on Saturday.
