The Hillsborough inquiry panel, chaired by Bishop of Liverpool James Jones, sat for the first time on Thursday.

Joined by veteran broadcaster Peter Sissons and a range of other experts, the panel will sift through the millions of official papers which document the tragedy.

The inquiry is expected to last up to two years, and will finally unveil key facts about the event to the families of those involved, and to the public.

The panel intend to inform the families of each of the 96 victims of the specific nature of their death.

Bishop James said: "I’m pleased that today the Hillsborough Independent Panel can start with the challenge we face. Today is first and foremost about listening to the voices of those affected by the tragedy."

Alongside Bishop James, the panel includes information expert Christine Gifford, television producer Katy Jones, ex-Northern Ireland deputy chief constable Paul Leighton, former Department of Health director Dr Bill Kirkup, criminologist Professor Phil Scraton, archivist Sarah Tyacke and newsreader Peter Sissons.

Margaret Aspinall, chair of the Hillsborough Family Support Group said the organisation welcomed the work of the panel.
