He has been a waxwork at Madame Tussauds and bronze statue at Lime Street station - now Liverpool's very own Ken Dodd has been recreated as a penguin!

Local artist Lee O'Brien, chose the funnyman as inspiration for his Go Penguins creation, 'Pen Dodd', which was unveiled as the city's favourite design at St George's Hall on Tuesday.

Coming face-to-face with his counterpart, the 82-year-old said: "I'm delighted and thrilled and I think it's wonderful. The young man who designed it is such a nice fella, who is a great creative artist. I don't think he could have done anything better.

"It's quite suitable because I walk like a penguin. When you're a gentleman of a certain age, you don't sprint, you waddle."

The 5ft statue wears Doddy's trademark bright suit and bow tie and even comes complete with a tickle stick and diddy man. Tuesday's presentation was the first time 28-year-old Lee had seen his design come to life.

Lee, from Waterloo, said: "I think it looks great. The hair could have been a bit more wild, but everything else is true to form and the colours are spot on. It was great to meet the real Ken as well."

'Pen Dodd' will now be auctioned off with the other 62 penguins to raise money for children's charity Liverpool Unites, which was set up in the wake of Rhys Jones' murder.

And Ken hinted he may even make an offer: "I'm going to look in my Post Office savings and see how much I've got to spare and might make a bid myself."
