A woman who collapsed into a coma while on holiday in Spain has died.

Mother-of-two Andrea Salkeld died more than four months after falling into a coma following a suspected heart attack whilst on holiday in Spain.

Andrea's journey home to the UK was delayed after a wrangle with insurers following a mix up with holiday dates on a policy document.

Mondial Assistance, booked through cheapholidayinsurance.org.uk, eventually agreed there had been a simple human error and accepted liability following publicity on the case. She was returned to the UK for treatment four months ago.

Andrea had suffered a number of infections and eventually died from pneumonia. She passed away with her family by her side on November 29.

Her heartbroken mother Carol Jones, who has kept a vigil by Andrea's hospital bed ever since she fell ill, said her beloved daughter "just couldn't fight any more."

She said: "I've been at her side every day ever since she fell ill.

"It's been so very difficult. We kept thinking she was going to pull through.

"She did so well.

"After four months she just couldn't fight any more.

"We did not plan a traditional Christmas as I thought I was going to be with her in hospital.

"It's hard to carry on but we've got to find a way.

"Andrea's boys are finding it very tough but they are doing their mum proud.

"We must go on, because it is what Andrea would have wanted."

Andrea’s family remain unclear about the cause of the sudden heart attack which left her on a ventilator for two days in Spain. Post mortem results are expected within weeks, which Carol hopes will shed light on the reason for Andrea's death.

Andrea lived in Newton, Chester, with her two sons Christopher, 17, and Kieran, 18, had been treated Aintree University Hospital for a few days before being transferred to critical care at the Countess of Chester Hospital to be nearer her family.

Carol said that at times Andrea had shown signs of life and responded to her family by smiling, crying and yawning.

Carol paid tribute to her daughter, saying: "She liked to enjoy herself and was always a proper daredevil.

"She used to live for today, loved doing things for charity and had done two charity bungee jumps.

"She was very outgoing and friendly and was the life and soul of the party."

Carol and family would like to thank everyone who supported them, including attending a fundraising event at Penyfford, which raised over £500 to be split between The Countess of Chester hospital and the Air Ambulance Service.

Andrea's ashes will be buried in a private ceremony at Hope cemetery on 23rd December.
