A criver crashed his car as he became the victim of a "drive by shooting" at a busy Liverpool motorway junction.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a number of shots were fired at the car at "The Rocket" Junction at the end of the M62 motorway.

The victim was driving his black Ford Focus towards the motorway when a number of bullets were fired at his car by a gunman in another vehicle.

As a result the car collided with a red Ford Focus but the driver and a passenger in the black Ford Focus were uninjured.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "The woman driver of the red Ford Focus suffered minor whiplash injuries. The occupants of both cars were distressed by their ordeal.

"At this stage of the investigation the motive for the shooting is unknown, although it is believed to be targeted."

The Rocket Junction was cordoned off while crime scene investigators carried out forensic examinations and diversions were put in place.

House-to-house inquiries were being carried out and high visibility patrols were stepped-up in the area to reassure the community.

Anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information is asked to contact the Matrix team on 0151 777 5699, the Gun crime hotline on 0800 458 1211 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
