Two men died when a tipper truck apparently hit an overhead power cable in Cheshire.

The pair, aged in their 40s, were in the rear of the lorry when the incident took place in Middlewich. The driver of the vehicle was unhurt.

Cheshire Police said they were called to the scene in Booth Lane at 2.15pm on Friday following reports the men had been electrocuted.

Initial inquiries suggested the tipper section of the lorry was raised to off-load road surfacing material and came into contact with overhead electrical lines, a police spokeswoman said.

She added: "Two men who are both in their 40s, and local, were at the rear of the lorry and received injuries which were fatal at the scene.

"The driver of the lorry, a 54-year-old man from Derbyshire, was not injured."

The Health and Safety Executive was informed.

Next of kin of the deceased have been notified but no further details will released at this stage, police said.
