The suspect wanted for the assault at Aigburth

Police are hunting the suspect in this picture after staff at Merseyrail station were abused and assaulted after a man was challenged over fare-dodging.

The attack happened on 23 September when a man, travelling from Hunts Cross arrived at Aigburth station at around 1.30pm without a valid ticket.

He was stopped by ticket inspectors who were about to issue him with a £20 on-the-spot fine. The man refused to accept the fine and tried to pay for the journey with a £10 note.

When informed this was not acceptable he became abusive and and ran off, but collided with a woman inspector knocking a mobile phone from her hand and bruising her wrist.

PC David Baier, of British Transport police said: “We really need to speak to the man captured in the CCTV as he may have vital information in relation to this investigation.

“Thankfully the ticket inspector was not seriously injured following the incident, but she was shaken and suffered nasty bruising to her arm.

“The inspectors were simply trying to do their job and should have been able to carry out their duties without fear of violence or abuse.

“The behaviour of the man travelling without a ticket was completely unacceptable and I would appeal to anyone with information about the incident, or who recognises the man in the CCTV, to come forward.”
