A blind war veteran from Liverpool begins his ascent of Africa’s highest mountain to raise money for injured soldiers.
Craig “Freddie” Lundberg, aims to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro to help other troops wounded in battle.
The 24-year-old soldier will join several other injured servicemen in a bid to reach the summit in Tanzania.
He will climb alongside his former army comrade, Darren Topham, who carried him from the Basra rooftop.
Lance corporal Lundberg commanded eight men in the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment when his unit was attacked in Iraq two years ago.
He was hit in the chest by a rocket propelled grenade which exploded when it struck his body armour.
Craig was mentioned in dispatches for his heroism after he continued to give orders and returned fire, despite losing his left eye.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free standing mountain in the world.
The climbers will trek for seven days across rough terrain and cope with the effects of extreme altitude to reach the mountain’s summit.
Craig hopes to raise £6,000 through sponsorship forms and his donations’ site.
