Town hall contracts fraud probe

by Tony McConville. Published Wed 25 Jun 2008 09:25

Fraud squad detectives have been quizzing a former town hall official over allegations that he was involved in a contracts swindle.

Police lifted William Mitchell, 49 at his home in Litherland, and a second man, as part of an enquiry into allegations of fraud, abuse of postion in public office and perjury.

Mr Mitchell was first suspended from duty by Sefton Borough Council since December 2007 and was dismissed three months later following an internal investigation.

Among his town hall duties in the Technical Services Department Mr Michell handled requests for council house repairs.

Merseyside Police confirmed that they had arrested two men but said a 54-year-old man was released after a short period on police bail.

A force spokesman said the 49-year-old was being detained at a police station on Merseyside for what was expected to be extensive questioning.

It is thought the older man is a buidling insdustry worker who accepted contracts which Mr Mitchell processed.
