Big Brother winner Craig Phillips has honoured 'Britain's Bravest Lollipop Man' at NHS Sefton Staff Awards.

George Murphy, 73, who mans the crossing outside Ursuline Primary, in Crosby, was presented with a health champion award by Craig.

The popular lollipop man had undergone major surgery and been diagnosed with cancer but was still determined to return to Ursuline to ensure pupils had a safe crossing to and from school.

Mark McQueen, headteacher of Ursuline said "George is adored by the whole school community due to his cheerful nature and infinite supply of jokes for the children, parents and staff."

Craig ensured that NHS staff felt like they were the stars of the awards as he mingled with all the winners and nominees at Liverpool's Marriott Hotel.

Scouser Craig, who grew up in Seaforth and attended Crosby's Manor High School, congratulated all the winners for doing "a fantastic job."

He said: "Everyone in this room does a fantastic job, community nurses, health visitors and people who tirelessly promote a healthy living message to improve the health of Sefton community."

He was thrilled to be supporting such a worthy cause and said: "Luckily I have not had much call to use the NHS but it's good to know we have these services when we do need them."

"Many people from other countries do not have the privilege of the free services we do."
