A kitten has been rescued from a lock at Queen’s Dock, Liverpool. The female, which is described as tabby and white and around 10-weeks-old, had become stuck on a concrete slab at the water’s edge, and couldn’t get out.
It took an RSPCA inspector and animal collection officer over two hours to capture her last Tuesday morning (14 July). ACO Matt Brown said: “It was a really difficult rescue.
“She was stuck about 20ft down so one of us had to winch the other down.
“The kitten didn’t want us anywhere near her, and at one point actually swam off to try to escape us.
“We had to go wading through the water to get to her.”
The kitten, named ‘Queenie’ by her rescuers because of where she was found, is now being cared for at a local veterinary practice.
It’s believed she is ‘feral’. Though the same species as domestic cats, feral cats don't live with humans and are essentially ‘wild’, reacting to people as a wild animal would.
“We’re assessing her behaviour to see whether she’ll be able to go into a home environment or not. She’s very young so we’re hopeful that’ll be the case, “ said ACO Brown. “She wasn’t injured and doesn’t seem to be suffering from any obvious health problems so the prognosis is good so far.”
