The second official Beatles Day united celebrities, fans, musicians, artists and local revellers throughout the city to raise money for Alder Hey's Imagine appeal and the Marina Dalglish Appeal.

Fans flocked to the streets to glimpse Liverpool funnyman Ricky Tomlinson, who hosted the event dressed as his alter-ego Jim Royle before changing into a mop top wig to honour the fab four.

A host of Liverpool-born musicians delighted the crowds with Beatles classics, including Tommy Scott from Spaced singing Let It Be, the Farm covering In My Life, and Cherryghost's Simon Aldred with a Day in the Life.

Revellers were also treated to a variety of cultural fun, including The Liverpool Signing Choir, The Hope Street Beatles Puppets in Liverpool One, and Liverpool artist Andy Prior created a Beatles Mural at the Cavern Walks shopping centre (see photos).

Tribute act the Backbeat Beatles were amongst the all-scouse line up to perform at the Echo Arena, where the climax to the day's events took place. The Greenbank Choir sang I Am the Walrus while the Liverpool Ukulele Society performed a medley of Beatles hits.

John Lennon's sister, Julia Baird, attened the star- studded event. She said she wasn't surprised The Beatles were as popular as ever.

"They're in the same place as Elvis and Frank Sinatra. They wrote all their own music and it was all so different.

"And even children today know them – if you go into a school, they'll be able to sing all the words."

Beatles Day Organiser Chas Cole said: "I thought 'Wouldn't it be great to have a day celebrating the biggest band the world has ever seen?'

"Not so much about them, the four guys in the Beatles, but their music, where it came from, why they did what they did.

"That's what Beatles Day is about."

He also revealed long-term plans that could see Beatles Day go worldwide.

"In ten years, there's no reason why there shouldn't be a Buenos Aires Beatles Day or a Tokyo Beatles Day."

All funds raised during the day were donated to Alder Hey's Imagine appeal and the Marina Dalglish Appeal. Last year, Beatles Day raised £50,000 for charity.
