Police have released an E-fit image of a man wanted over a burglary in the Liverpool City Region.

At about 9.10am on Monday 29th June a man called at a house on Stapelton Road, Rainhill, asking for the resident to complete a shopping survey.

He produced an identity badge on arrival but the woman could not quite see the details.

The 39-year-old woman obliged and spent about 10 minutes answering his questions.

After the man had left, the woman looked around her house to find that items, including a laptop, gift vouchers, cash and jewellery had been taken.

She then realised that her front door had been left wide open.

Police officers would like to remind members of the public not to allow anyone inside their home that they do not know and to call police if they are suspicious of anyone calling at their door.

Detective Inspector Ged Seddon: "Most callers at your home are genuine but some are not and it's important that communities keep an eye out for one another and report any suspicious behaviour to the police.

"It is possible that this lady's door was left open by the man conducting the survey, so that others could come inside to steal her belongings. This is frightening experience for an elderly lady to have to go through."

Merseyside Police say there are steps that can be taken by residents to reduce their chances of becoming a victim.

They are:-

* The best defence against a doubtful caller is to have a viewer or spy hole in the door and a stout door chain.

* Always make sure visitors are who they say they are by asking to see their identity card.

* If you are in any doubt about who they are, phone the company and check. If you do this don't use the number on their card, look in the phone book for it. Ask the person to wait while you check and never leave the front door open.

* If the caller leaves and you are still unsure about their credibility write down any details of the person who has called at your house, including registration numbers of cars they are travelling in, and contact the local police station.

* If anyone in anyway suspects a caller they should contact the police immediately.

* If someone is offering to do repair work on the house, the home owner should ask for credentials and recommendations and should follow up on any information handed to them.
