MERSEYSIDE cab drivers showed their support for jailed Michael Shields today after the Liverpool fan was refused a pardon by the government last week.
Cabbies staged a "taxi procession demo" to protest Justice Secretary Jack Straw's decision, with 25 vehicles passing by the Shields family home before circling around the city centre.
Cab driver Patrick Jones admitted the demo was neccesary and vowed to fight on for justice for Michael.
He said: "Michael is innocent.
"Jack Straw's decision to refuse him his freedom after four long years is a disgrace so we want to show our support in every way we possibly can.
"The demo was done to show our disappointment at the decison and hopefully it will keep people fighitng for justice."
Michael was jailed for 10 years for attempting to muder a Bulgarian waiter in 2005.
Michael has always maintained his innocence and another man confessed to the crime in 2005 but later withdrew his statement.
But in a provisional decision last week, Jack Straw said he was unable to conclude Michael was "morally and technically innocent."
But he says he is prepared to meet members of the family before making a final decision next month.
The Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, said: "I continue to believe Michael is innocent."
