The country's most advanced animal hospital is offering free treatment to many of its animal patients as a lifeline to ailing pets in the recession.

The ultra-modern PDSA PetAid Hospital in Kirkdale, is promising life saving free treatments to four legged friends who's owners cannot afford high priced pet bills.

Run by leading veternary charity this state-of-the-art facility has six consulting rooms, a digital X-ray room, and a dental theatre.

Housing separate recovery wards for animals of all shapes, breeds and sizes the unit also specalises in critical care ward for pets with infectious diseases.

Already treating around 150 patients each day, staff are willing to go above and beyond by giving free treatments to anyone who is receiving benefits or disability.

Nurse Williams said: "Very often we have to work extra hours as we have so many patients that often just can't fit in in our scheduled working hours.

"With the new plan we will probably see even more pets coming through the doors but no one really minds as at the end of the day the animals have to come first."

Pensioner Dorothy Carmichael, is a frequent visitor to the hospital with her 12-year-old dog Misty who has needed treatment for her ears, digestive system, and skin.

And Mrs Carmichael, 67, admits her beloved pet wouldn't have received such top-class treatment without the free service from the hospital.

She said: "Misty is an old dog, so she has a lot of problems and as I'm a pensioner I couldn't afford to pay for her treatment and medication.

"I think it's really important to have charities like this.

"Misty is really important to me and without the hospital I don't know what I would do."

Treatment at the hospital is free for Liverpool residents receiving Housing or Council Tax Benefit.

Funds come from legacies, donations and through the work of the fundraising team, including the PDSA charity shops.

The hospital's practice manager Lorne Littler said: "We ask every client to make a donation, whatever they can afford, even if they can only give 50p, it goes a long way.

"People who can't give us money, often bring kitchen rolls, towels, cotton wool or washing powder.

"This helps us no end as we try to cut down costs as much as we can."

Senior PDSA veternary surgeon, Stephen McArdle, says he enjoys this job more than any private practice in which he has worked.

Mr McArdle said: "I love the challenge of extensive clinical work, as there are many patients, and we see many challenging cases.

"I like to be busy during the day and feel that I've done a good day's work when I go home.

"The job is very rewarding in that way as the people you help really need it."

"Everyone seems to think that you get what you pay for, but the PDSA proves them wrong."
