An armed Liverpool gang have been arrested on suspicion of robbery after a security guard was stabbed during a savage raid in Preston.
Delivering money to an ATM machine outside Booths supermarket in Longton, the guard was knocked to the floor before being stabbed in the leg with a machete.
A second guard was hit in the face and suffered minor injuries. Both needed treatment at Royal Preston Hospital.
The brutal attack happened around 10.10 am on Tuesday outside the busy supermarket on Liverpool Road close to the A59.
Four men from Liverpool, aged 23, 31, and two 27-year-olds were arrested and are being questioned in stations across Lancashire.
Despite the brutal attack, the robbers fled empty handed after the alarm was raised.
Detective Inspector Marc Nasser from Leyland CID said: "I would appeal to anyone with any information about this attempted robbery, or for any further witnesses to come forward and contact police.
“We are also keen to speak to people that saw the attempted robbery itself or noticed anybody acting strangely around Booths either on the day, or those leading up to the incident.
"I would be particularly interested in speaking to anyone in Liverpool who may have any information about the attackers or the vehicles used.
"We believe two cars were involved in this attempted robbery; a black Volkswagen Golf and a dark Audi estate.
“If anyone thinks they saw either car, the driver or its occupants I would urge them to give us a call on 08451 25 35 45 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
All four men are believed to be involved in the robbery - two for assaulting the security guards, a man driving the get-away car and a fourth man in the passenger seat.
A burnt out Volkswagen Golf, was found on Stryands in Longton shortly after the incident and a second vehicle, a dark Audi estate with tinted windows, registration SC04 FFY, is also thought to have been abandoned and set alight near Wymott prison.
Police are questioning the men at stations in Lancashire.
