Liverpool's 08 Culture Year star "Superlambananas" are coming back... and will go on sale to the public as a "green icon".

To mark Liverpool's Year of the Environment (YOE), a flock of 500 limited edition green superlambananas have been created to help celebrate the special year.

Emblazoned with the YOE motif, and of course using environmentally friendly paint, they will soon become collector’s items and will be on sale at the 08 Place.

Liverpool City Council’s executive member for the environment, Councillor Berni Turner, said: “Last year, the response to the Superlambananas was unbelievable.

"Everyone loved the Superlambanana trail and as a result wanted to have their very own desktop-size version – and the miniature lambies literally flew off the shelves wherever they were being sold.

“It’s almost a year since the 119 icons appeared around every corner in the city and their popularity is still going strong - and there is demand for more of the iconic statues.

“It made sense we produce an environmentally-friendly version which supports our special year, and as it’s limited edition we expect it to be extremely popular.”

The special 2009 Superlambananas go on sale on Wednesday 10 June and cost £35.

Year of the Environment celebrates the region’s green credentials, encourages environmental debate across Merseyside and challenges residents, businesses and visitors to get involved and pledge to reduce their carbon footprint.

The YOE team is asking everyone to back this special year by becoming a Green Ambassador and then make a green pledge.

Anyone who would like to be considered as a Green Ambassador should email ourcityourplanet@liverpool.gov.uk, giving details of all the environmental activities they’re involved in and anything special they’re planning for 2009, such as a green event.

The Green Pledge is easy to make and gives individuals, community groups, businesses or schools the chance to make any number of green pledges.

Anyone who wants to get involved needs to decide what green activity they would like to do and then make an individual pledge to achieve, or do something involving other volunteers who’ll assist them in achieving their aim.

Just go online to www.ourcityourplanet.co.uk, click on the pledge pages and follow all the simple instructions – it couldn’t be easier. Once the task has been completed go back online and mark it as finished – so the YOE team can see who is going that extra mile for this special year.

People should share their success by taking photographs of pledgers working hard to achieve their activity and then post them on the Flickr website (tagged with Our City Our Planet Pledge or Liverpool Year of the Environment or Green Liverpool).
