Three soldier brothers marched with pride through their home town as their Army regiment was granted the freedom of the Borough of Wirral.

Lance Corporal Chris and Privates Mike and Darren Kilby were among 350 soldiers on parade as The Mercian Regiment was granted the freedom of Wirral.

1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment (Cheshire), led by the Band of 4th Battalion The Mercian Regiment, then marched through the town of Birkenhead - the home town of Chris, 23, Mike, 21, and Darren, 19.

The brothers all served in Iraq at the same time, when 1 MERCIAN served a six-month tour of duty ending May 2008.

Lance Corporal Chris Kilby said: "It's great to march through your home town. I've done it a few times before, but every time has been great."

Private Mike Kilby added: "I enjoyed it, especially seeing so many people around cheering and clapping - it makes you proud to serve in the British Army."

This afternoon's parade in Birkenhead was the last of six 'freedom' parades carried out by 1 MERCIAN this week, having already marched en masse through Ellesmere Port, Chester, Congleton, Runcorn and Nantwich.

The battalion traditionally recruits almost all of its soldiers from Cheshire and the Wirral. The battalion is based in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, and is training towards possible future deployments, which includes a six-week training exercise in Kenya later this year.
