It has been revealed that the secret behind Everton's success in the FA Cup is not tactics or ball skills but a lucky apron used by the cook.

The unusual lucky charm belongs to the clubs head chef Paula Smith, who claims the Blues have never lost away from home when she has donned the Navy pinney.

And the culinery whizz promises the garment will be the first thing packed on the trip to Wembley.

Having worked at Everton's Finch Farm for two years, the chef has stuck to a tried and tested recipe for success feeding the squad twice a day six days a week.

With a stable diet of mainly chicken and fish, Paula and her kitchen staff are in charge of keeping players energy levels high during midweek training and at a peak on matchday.

But unlike other top teams, Everton have stuck to the same feeding routine after every match consisting of homemade burgers and Paelle.

Head chef Paula said: "The lads are very easy to feed and always finish their plates so I must be doing something right.

"Their favourite dishes through the week are Sea Bass, or Grilled Salmon but after every match they always demand my homemade burgers and paelle.

"After two years it has become a sort of ritual but it seems to work as the lads keep winning.

"I travel to most games away from Goodison and I have an apron I wear on the bus and we have never lost a game when I've worn it.

"It was the first thing I packed for Wembley and hopefully we can bring home the trophy.

"Everton is like my extended family and just a joy to work for and we deserve to win the cup.

"I'll be in the crowd on Saturday chearing on the boys. I just haven't decided if i'll be wearing my apron."
